The purpose of the Mapshop Data Downloads page is to provide open access to datasets collected and generated by students enrolled in GEO509 or in collaboration with Mapshop. Data is provided in two formats, .kml, compatible with Google Earth, and a zipped .shp file, for use with GIS software. The majority of these datasets represent field data collected by the students themselves, though some were generated by transforming publicly-available tabular data into a mappable format. Due to the research focus of Mapshop, these datasets are typically oriented toward the Northeast portion of the city of Lexington. By sharing these datasets with the larger community we hope to encourage discussion about the value and uses of public data and about community mapping more broadly.
We will continue to expand the number of datasets available here as our project continues.
